Provision of relevant, clinical information is important to ensure a clinically, relevant result
Always provide:

•  specimen source
•  clinical history

Neisseria gonorrhoeae culture is preferred if there is a clinical history of treatment failure or sexual exposure/assault, or for neonatal (<3 months) conjunctival specimens

Routine diagnostic testing or N. gonorrhoeae is performed by NAAT in conjunction with testing for Chlamydia trachomatis.  Refer to Chlamydia and gonorrhoeae screen (Calgary/South)

Note:  The yield of Neisseria gonorrhoeae is improved with refrigeration of the specimen.  Suggest refrigeration of the sample if this is the suspected organism

Transport to the testing laboratory as soon as possible after collection

Rejection Criteria:
  • Mislabelled or unlabelled specimen or container
  • No swab in the collection device
  • Desiccated swab/transport media
